Direct Tribal Lenders: The Verified List

“Direct lender” is the phrase that separates the companies that actually make loans from the marketing sites that sell your application to whoever pays. In tribal lending the distinction is also legal: the sovereign-immunity claim belongs to the tribe’s lending entity, not to a broker.

The short answer: A direct tribal lender underwrites and funds its own loans. Thirteen-plus brands currently operate this way — Spotloan, Big Picture Loans, MaxLend, Plain Green, River Valley Loans among them — each owned by a named tribe with its own published terms and exclusion lists.

Check offers for your state

One short form routes your request to lenders licensed or operating in your area. Checking offers here does not affect a credit score; any later application with a lender may involve a credit check.

The verified direct tribal lenders

Our tribal lenders directory keeps the full table — the short version: Spotloan (Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa), Big Picture Loans (Lac Vieux Desert Band), MaxLend (Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara Nation), Plain Green Loans (Chippewa Cree), River Valley Loans (Crow Creek Sioux), MobiLoans (Tunica-Biloxi), and others — thirteen brands we verified from their own sites in September 2026.

Ownership matters because it is where the legal protections do and do not apply. Each brand names its tribe and, increasingly, a tribal regulator — a real difference from the pre-2015 “rent-a-tribe” era that the FTC dismantled.

Direct lender vs. lead generator

Three checks separate the two. A direct lender has a loan agreement in its own name and discloses the owning tribe; a broker shows a form and then a “lender network” page. A direct lender names its tribal regulator or dispute process; a broker names advertisers. And a direct lender’s rates appear in the agreement you sign — a broker never shows you a rate at all.

There is nothing illegal about lead generation, but submitting your SSN and bank details to a broker puts your data in more hands than one application requires. If the site you are on does not name a tribe, it is not a tribal direct lender.

What direct tribal lenders charge

Published numbers from the brands that disclose them: 250%–699% APR (Big Picture Loans), up to 490% (Spotloan), 630%–780% (Northern Star Lending), 73.89%–413.20% for the MobiLoans line of credit. Brands that do not publish an APR — MaxLend quotes fees per $100 per pay period — disclose only inside the agreement. Either way, compare the total of payments, not the per-period figure.

Why the exclusion lists matter

Each direct lender publishes the states it will not serve — eighteen jurisdictions in MaxLend’s case, twenty-two in MobiLoans’. We compute per-state availability from those lists on every state page. Lenders without a published list are marked “unknown” rather than assumed available, because absence of evidence is not availability.

Frequently asked questions

Which tribal lenders are direct lenders?

Spotloan, Big Picture Loans, MaxLend, Plain Green Loans, River Valley Loans, MobiLoans, Bright Lending, Makwa Finance, 605 Lending, Northern Star Lending, Blue Mountain Loans, Golden Valley Lending (paused), and a few smaller brands — each owned by a named tribe. The full verified table is in our directory.

Is a tribal direct lender legal?

Tribal lending entities operate under tribal law, and federally recognized tribes are sovereign. Whether a state’s consumer laws also apply is an active legal question that courts have answered differently by case — see our state guides for enforcement history.

How do I know a site is really a tribal lender?

It names the owning tribe and the lending LLC, presents its own loan agreement, and names a tribal regulator or arbitration process. Sites that forward you to a “network” are brokers, not lenders.

Do direct tribal lenders check credit?

Most verify income and banking instead of running a hard pull at application; a few reserve the right to check later. Details vary by brand — ask before applying.

Where our numbers come from

Lender figures cite each brand’s own published terms (verified September 2026). Nothing here is a loan offer; costs shown are examples computed from published rates, not quotes.
